Personalized Approach

The Autoimmune Protocol is not a fixed diet. There is no set prescription to eat 3 cups of Kale, 9-ounces of bone broth, 1 sweet potato, and walk 1/2 a mile each day. It is a personalized approach to support YOU and YOUR BODY. We are not all the same; even those with the same autoimmune disorder have varying symptoms. The Autoimmune Protocol is just that, a protocol for you to follow to support your health. This means what you eat on AIP, how you spend your time on AIP, may look very different from someone else following AIP. I found a wonderful study published in December 2024 that you may find helpful.

Autoimmune Disorders in the AIP Study

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
  • Celiac Disease
  • Systematic Lupus Erythematosus

Autoimmune diseases often involve chronic inflammation driven in part by dietary triggers. In their December 2024 Metabol Open paper, Pardali et al. introduce the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet as a fully personalized elimination–reintroduction regimen tailored for patients with various autoimmune conditions.

The authors outline a multi-phase approach: first, systematically removing foods suspected of fueling inflammation; next, reintroducing them one by one while monitoring symptoms; and finally, maintaining a customized eating plan rich in nutrient-dense, gut-supportive foods. In a pilot cohort, participants demonstrated strong adherence, reported notable improvements in fatigue, joint pain, and gastrointestinal discomfort, and showed metabolomic shifts consistent with reduced inflammatory activity.

Although exploratory, these findings support the feasibility and potential of the personalized AIP diet as an adjunctive strategy in autoimmune care. The study paves the way for larger randomized trials to validate its clinical impact and long-term benefits.

Participants reported the following:

  • Reduction in fatigue and a noticeable boost in overall energy
  • Decreased joint pain, stiffness, and improved mobility
  • Alleviation of gastrointestinal symptoms (less bloating, cramping and diarrhea)
  • Improvement in skin-related issues and fewer flares (e.g., psoriasis plaques)
  • Favorable shifts in metabolomic profiles indicating lower systemic inflammation
  • Enhanced quality of life, including better sleep and mood stability
